Trout Fishing in Mid Wales: The Best Lakes
By Alex Clayton · Updated 24 October 2026
The best trout fishing in Mid Wales is on three groups of upland reservoirs in Powys. Llyn Clywedog near Llanidloes is stocked every week with rainbows and browns, and you can fish it from the bank or a boat. The Elan Valley and Claerwen reservoirs near Rhayader hold predominantly wild brown trout, fly only and bank only, for the cheapest permits in the area. Lake Vyrnwy is wild brown trout, fly only, from a boat.
Choose between them on four things: wild or stocked fish, boat or bank, cost, and season length. The table below sets out each operator’s current prices and seasons. Each water then gets its own section and a link to its full guide.
Mid Wales fly fishing also needs a rod licence on top of any permit. That is covered in the rules section.
Mid Wales Trout Lakes Compared: Fish, Boats, Prices and Seasons
The cheapest adult day here is £18 for wild trout from the bank at Claerwen. A day afloat costs £45 per rod at Vyrnwy with the engine included, or £57 at Clywedog if one angler adds a £28 motor boat to a £29 day permit. Most of the price gap is the boat, not the fish.

The short version for Powys trout fishing: for boats on tap and the longest season, go to Clywedog. For wild fish cheaply from the bank, go to Elan.
Llyn Clywedog: Stocked Trout, Boats and the Longest Season
If you have one day and want fish in the net, Clywedog is the safest bet. The club stocks it every week from its own trout farm.
The reservoir covers 615 acres on the headwaters of the Severn. It was built in the late 1960s, sits just over 900 ft above sea level, and is a short drive from Llanidloes. Llanidloes and District Angling Association runs it.
The fish. Rainbow and brown trout go in weekly, around 40,000 fish a year. The fish stocks page has the stock table.
Boats. The fleet is 35 boats with 4hp outboards, plus a wheelie boat for anglers with limited mobility. The 2026 boat prices are:
- Motor boat: £28
- Evening motor boat from 3pm: £20
- Single-man boat (weekdays only): £22
- 3-day holiday package for two anglers with a motor boat: £240
Permits for 2026. A full day costs £29, a concession day £28 and a youth day £20. An evening permit from 3pm is £20 with a 3-fish limit, and a full season is £420. Buy at the lodge by the boat moorings, or ring 01686 412890 to book the lodge or a boat (permits and prices).
Season. 12 March to 30 November 2026, the longest of the Mid Wales lakes covered here.
Rules. The bag limit, methods and tackle rules are in the fishery’s rules PDF. Read it before you fish.
Fly life. According to the fishery, buzzers hatch in spring and autumn, the Coch-y-bonddu beetle shows from early June into July, and daddy long legs follow in autumn. The altitude keeps the water cool, so trout keep feeding through summer.

Best for: first-timers, boat anglers and late-season trips. Skip if: you only want wild fish. Check with the fishery before you travel.
Elan Valley and Claerwen: Wild Brown Trout From the Bank
Turn up with a float tube and it will stay in the car. The Elan waters are bank only, with no boats and no float tubes allowed.
Instead you get five upland reservoirs near Rhayader. Caban Coch, Garreg Ddu, Pen-y-Garreg and Craig Goch make up about 850 acres between them and are listed as a Troutmaster water. Claerwen adds another 900 acres. Rhayader and Elan Valley Angling Association runs the fishing.
The fish. The club describes Claerwen as a wild brown trout fishery whose natural fish have never been restocked. Sources disagree on whether the four Elan reservoirs are still stocked, so treat them as predominantly wild and ask the club if it matters.
Rules. Both are fly only with a 4-fish limit. The Elan Valley estate also sets out:
- No boats or float tubes
- No camping or fires
- Permits are only valid with a rod licence
- No permits are sold for Dol y Mynach
Permits. The Elan reservoirs cost £20 a day or £85 for the season (£75 for OAP and disabled anglers). Claerwen is £18 a day or £75 for the season (£65 OAP and disabled). Juniors pay £4 a day, or £25 for a season that covers all club waters.
Where to buy. Permits are sold at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre, Hafod Hardware on East Street in Rhayader, and D. Powell newsagents on West Street, Rhayader. Opening times vary, so ring ahead.
Season. 20 March to 17 October.
A warning about Claerwen. The club said major works at Claerwen Dam were highly likely in summer 2026, and permits are not refunded. Check with the club before you drive out.
The Elan Valley fishing guide goes through each reservoir in turn.
Best for: wild trout on a budget, at £18 to £20 a day, if you are happy to walk the bank.
Lake Vyrnwy: Loch-Style Drifting for Wild Brown Trout
At Vyrnwy, the fish go back once you have had your share. The bag limit is 4 per rod, and after that it is catch and release on barbless hooks.
Who runs it. The fishing is run by Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa at Llanwddyn, Powys SY10 0LY. Contact reception on 01691 870692.
How you fish it. Fly only, and from a boat only. Expect a loch-style drift with a team of three flies. Life jackets are mandatory.
Prices for 2026. The boat engine and battery are included in every ticket:
- Day: £45 per rod, or £60 for two sharing a boat
- Half day: £35, or £45 for two
- Evening after 5pm: £19.50
- 2-day resident package: £78 for one rod, £105 for two
- Under-16s fish free with an adult rod
Season. 1 April to mid-October, weather dependent.
The fish. Vyrnwy is a predominantly wild brown trout water. The hotel has not published a current stocking policy, so if stocked fish matter to you, ask when you book.
An early-season tip from the hotel. Fish a team of three black or dark wet flies in size 10 or 12, with a Montana or a Viva on the tail, close to the shore under the overhanging trees.
The Lake Vyrnwy fly fishing guide covers drifts and flies in depth.
If you have never drifted loch-style, share a boat: two rods for £60 is £30 each, the cheapest full day on Vyrnwy. Check with the fishery before you travel.
Rod Licence, Permits and the Welsh Rules
A £20 permit does not make you legal on its own. Fishing without a rod licence can bring a fine of up to £2,500.
Licence and permit are different things. The rod licence is the legal requirement to fish at all; the permit is the fishery’s permission to fish its water. You need both.
Who needs a licence. In Wales, anyone aged 13 or over needs one to fish for trout, salmon, freshwater fish, smelt or eel, and that includes private waters (GOV.UK). Licences are bought through GOV.UK, not from Natural Resources Wales. Licences for 13 to 16 year olds are free.
Prices. For a trout and coarse licence covering up to two rods (GOV.UK):
| Licence | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 day | £7.30 |
| 8 days | £14.70 |
| 12 months | £36.80 |
| 12 months, 66+ or disabled | £24.50 |
Prices change, so check GOV.UK before you buy. Our page on fishing licence rules explains the options in full.
Welsh byelaws. Natural Resources Wales limits you to two rods at once on reservoirs, lakes and ponds. Lead weights are restricted, but size 8 dust shot and smaller, weights of 1oz or more, and lead in lures, weighted flies and lead-cored lines are exempt.
Fishery rules sit on top. Elan, Claerwen and Vyrnwy are fly only, and every water has its own bag limit and boat rules, as covered above. For close seasons across the UK, see fishing seasons. For the bigger picture beyond Powys, read our guide to fishing in Wales.
Which Mid Wales Water Suits You, and When to Go
Settle it with one choice: stocked fish, a boat, or the cheapest day on wild trout.
- First trip, or you want fish in the net: Clywedog.
- Wild fish from the bank on a budget: Elan, or Claerwen if the dam works allow.
- Traditional loch-style boat fishing: Vyrnwy.
- Families: under-16s fish free with an adult rod at Vyrnwy, Elan juniors pay £4 a day, and a Clywedog youth day is £20.
When to go. From March to May, Clywedog’s buzzers are the main event, while Vyrnwy opens in April to dark wets fished near the shore. From June into July, the Coch-y-bonddu beetle gives surface sport at Clywedog. In autumn, daddy long legs and a second run of buzzers take over there. Elan, Claerwen and Vyrnwy all close in mid-October, while Clywedog runs to 30 November.
If the lakes don’t suit. Both clubs sell river permits too. Rhayader’s cover 5 miles of the Wye plus stretches of the Marteg, Elan and Claerwen rivers, with a river trout season of 3 March to 30 September, at £15 a day or £40 a season. The Clywedog club’s river permits cost £10 a day or £30 a season, from Bradleys Petrol Station in Llanidloes.
Kit. Take a floating line and an intermediate or sinking line to cover the depths, plus a life jacket for any boat water.
If you can only make one trip, go to Clywedog in June, when the fishery says the Coch-y-bonddu beetle is on the water.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a rod licence to fish for trout in Mid Wales?
Yes. Anyone aged 13 or over needs a rod licence to fish for trout in Wales, even on private waters. Buy it on GOV.UK: a 1-day licence costs £7.30, and licences for 13 to 16 year olds are free. You also need the fishery's own permit.
Can I fish the Mid Wales reservoirs from the bank?
Yes, at three of the four. The Elan Valley reservoirs and Claerwen are bank only, with no boats or float tubes, and Llyn Clywedog allows both bank and boat fishing. Lake Vyrnwy is the exception: it is boat only, and life jackets are mandatory.

Clywedog runs from 12 March to 30 November 2026. Elan and Claerwen run from 20 March to 17 October, and Vyrnwy from 1 April to mid-October, weather dependent. The Rhayader club's river trout season is 3 March to 30 September. Check with the fishery before you travel.
Are the Mid Wales trout lakes stocked?
Clywedog is stocked weekly with rainbow and brown trout, around 40,000 fish a year. The club says Claerwen is wild and has never been restocked. The Elan reservoirs and Vyrnwy are predominantly wild brown trout waters, so ask the operator about any current stocking.
