Fishing Lake Vyrnwy
By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026
Lake Vyrnwy fishing is fly only, from a boat, for mainly wild brown trout, and one place sells the tickets: the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa at Llanwddyn, Powys. The season runs from 1 April to mid-October, weather permitting. There is no bank fishing anywhere on this 1,121-acre reservoir, so every cast is made from a drifting boat, loch style.
This guide to one of the best-known Mid Wales trout lakes covers the 2026 tickets, the licence and rules, how to fish a drift, the flies the fishery recommends and where to drift.
Lake Vyrnwy at a Glance: Size, Depth and What You’ll Catch
Water companies own and manage the reservoir, yet you buy your fishing from a hotel. Hafren Dyfrdwy, a Severn Trent subsidiary, manages the dam and United Utilities holds the abstraction rights. The RSPB and Hafren Dyfrdwy jointly run the nature reserve, while the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa sells and runs the fishing.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Length | About 7.6 km |
| Width | Up to 0.8 km |
| Area | 4.54 sq km (1,121 acres) |
| Maximum depth | 26 m (about 85 ft) |
| Dam built | 1881 to 1888 |
The Victorians stocked 40,000 Loch Leven trout, and Vyrnwy is now known as a predominantly wild brown trout water.
Reports suggest the wild browns average about 10oz to 1lb (roughly 0.3 to 0.45kg), with grayling, perch and pike also present. This is a numbers-of-wild-fish water, not a big-fish one. It suits anglers who want wild trout on big, scenic water more than heavy stocked rainbows.
Lake Vyrnwy Fishing Tickets and Prices for 2026
The boat comes with the ticket. The hotel includes the engine and battery in the price, so there is no separate boat hire to budget for on a Lake Vyrnwy fishing trip.
These are the hotel’s listed 2026 prices. Day rates include battery, engine and VAT.
| Ticket | 1 rod | 2 rods sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Full day | £45.00 | £60.00 |
| Half day | £35.00 | £45.00 |
| Evening (after 5pm) | £19.50 per rod | Not listed |
| 2-day resident rate | £78 | £105 |
Under 16s fish free when accompanied by an adult rod. That doesn’t settle the licence question for teenagers, which the next section covers.
To book, phone hotel reception on 01691 870692 or email info@lakevyrnwyhotel.co.uk. The online booking link on the hotel’s fishing page led to spa content when we checked in October 2026, so phone or email is the safer route.
The fishery gives the season as 1 April to mid-October, weather dependent. Prices and dates can change each year, so confirm both with the hotel.
If you’re coming for a weekend, ask about the 2-day resident rate when you book your room. Check with the fishery before you travel.
Rod Licence and Fishery Rules: Fly Only, Four Fish, Barbless, Life Jackets
A free junior ticket from the hotel doesn’t mean a 14-year-old can fish without a licence. You need the licence and the fishery’s rules.
The rod licence
You need an Environment Agency rod licence to fish for trout in England and Wales, including on private waters, and the hotel states that rods must carry one. GOV.UK prices for a trout and coarse licence, up to 2 rods:
- 1 day: £7.30
- 8 days: £14.70
- 12 months: £36.80
Under 13s need no licence, but 13 to 16-year-olds need a free junior licence alongside their free hotel ticket. Fishing without one risks a fine of up to £2,500. Prices change each year, so check GOV.UK first and see how rod licences work.
The fishery rules
- Fly only.
- Boat only, with no bank fishing.
- Bag limit of 4 fish per rod, then catch and release on barbless hooks.
- Life jackets worn at all times.
National and local byelaws in England and Wales also apply (see UK fishing seasons for close seasons), and the landowner can add its own rules. Barbless hooks speed up releases: wet your hands and keep the fish in the water.
Skip Vyrnwy if you want to fish from the bank or use bait. It’s fly from a boat or nothing.
How to Fish Vyrnwy Loch Style: Drifts, Shorelines and Hotspots
On a lake this size, the best fishing is often within a short cast of the bank you’re not allowed to fish from.
G.V. Westropp, author of Fishing on Lake Vyrnwy, is quoted on the hotel’s page making this point. The trout hold close to the shore, where food drops off the trees, so put your flies near the stones and under overhanging branches. He also warns that on some days every fish seems to be moving, and on others the lake seems empty.
Setting up a drift
- Motor upwind, then set up a long drift with the wind carrying the boat along a shoreline.
- Fish a team of three wet flies loch style, short casting ahead of the drifting boat.
- Work the flies tight to the stones and under the trees.
- When the drift runs out, motor back round wide of the line so you don’t disturb it.
As on any loch-style water, finish each retrieve by lifting the rod so the top dropper skims the surface.
Where to drift
The hotel names the Tower and the Boat House Pool among its marks. When the lake is 4 to 5 ft down, the shallow arms at Rhiwargor, Cedig and Llwyn Rhiw become unfishable, so stick to shoreline drifts on the main body. Open water this big gets rough in a strong wind, so keep your life jacket on and pick drifts where you can manage the boat.
On Llyn Clywedog, fished from the bank, you choose a bank. At Vyrnwy, you choose a drift.
Vyrnwy Fly Fishing: The Flies That Work Through the Season
If you only bring one colour early in the season, make it black. That is the hotel’s own advice for Vyrnwy fly fishing.
Early on, the hotel recommends dark wet flies in size 10 or 12: Black Pennell, Connemara Black, Bibio, Zulu and Mallard & Claret. From late May, on sunny days, it suggests brighter patterns such as the Invicta and Peter Ross, with the Alexandra also on its wet-fly list.
The fishery’s full recommended list, by type:
| Type | Patterns |
|---|---|
| Wet flies | Alexandra, Invicta, Bibio, Mallard & Claret, Black Pennell, Peter Ross, Connemara Black, Zulu |
| Dry flies | Claret Bumble, Greenwell’s Glory, Coch y Bondhu, G&H Sedge |
| Nymphs | Buzzers, Damsel, Diawl Bach, Pheasant Tail |
| Lures | Montana, Viva, Sweeny Todd, Muddler |
Once you’ve kept four fish, every hook must be barbless, so pinch the barbs on the whole team before you start. As general loch-style practice, a floating line suits short-lining a team of wets.
Set up with a dark pattern on the point and a brighter fly on the top dropper, and change the order before you change the flies.
Frequently asked questions
Can you fish Lake Vyrnwy from the bank?
No. The hotel says Lake Vyrnwy is fished from a boat, fly only. The engine and battery are included in the ticket price.
Is Lake Vyrnwy stocked?
Lake Vyrnwy is known as a predominantly wild brown trout water. The Victorians first stocked it with 40,000 Loch Leven trout. The current stocking policy could not be confirmed, so ask the hotel when you book if stocked fish matter to you.
How big are the trout in Lake Vyrnwy?
Reports put the wild brown trout at about 10oz to 1lb (0.3 to 0.45kg) on average, with grayling, perch and pike also present. These details come from a secondary source, not the fishery.
Can children fish at Lake Vyrnwy?
Yes. Under 16s fish free with an accompanying adult rod. Anglers aged 13 to 16 still need a free junior rod licence from GOV.UK, while under 13s need no licence at all. Life jackets are compulsory for everyone on the boat, children included.
Where else can I fly fish for trout in Mid Wales?
For bank fishing, try Llyn Clywedog, or look at the Elan Valley reservoirs. Our guide to trout lakes across Mid Wales compares them, and each venue page has its own tickets and rules. Check with the fishery before you travel.
