Fishing Rutland Water

By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026

Rutland Water is the largest artificial reservoir in the UK by surface area, at 10.86 sq km, and Rutland Water fishing is run by Anglian Water Parks from Normanton Fishing Lodge. It is two fisheries in one. Trout fishing is fly only, from bank and boat, from 14 March 2026 to 31 January 2027. Pike, perch and zander fishing is boat only, on set dates.

There is no coarse or bream permit on the operator’s pages, so leave the feeder rods at home unless the fishery tells you otherwise.

This guide covers 2026 prices, bank versus boat, the angler’s map and the predator and trout rules. For other big stillwaters, see our guide to UK lake and reservoir fishing.

Rutland Water at a Glance: What You Can Fish For

Some online guides talk about bream on the feeder at Rutland. The fishery’s own permit list tells a different story.

Item Detail
Operator Anglian Water Parks, Normanton Fishing Lodge, LE15 8HD
Size About 3,100 acre site, 10.86 sq km of water, first flooded 1976. Maximum depth around 33 to 34m (sources differ)
Trout Fly only, bank and boat, 14 March 2026 to 31 January 2027
Predators Pike, perch and zander, boat only, dated windows, all returned alive
Coarse and bream No permit offered on the operator’s pages
Licence Environment Agency rod licence needed as well as a permit

The fishery sells trout and predator permits only. If you want bream or other coarse fish, ask the fishery before you travel rather than assume a ticket exists.

The fishery closes after 31 January for four to six weeks while stocking starts, so there is no fishing in February.

If you are coming for coarse fish, Rutland is the wrong water. If you fly fish for trout, or fish for pike from a boat, fishing at Rutland gives you trout from mid-March and predators from May, both until the end of January, so read on.

Rutland Water Tickets, Boat Hire and Booking for 2026

Most Rutland guides skip the prices, which makes a day impossible to budget. These are the operator’s 2026 figures.

Trout day permits

Permit Bag Price
Day 8 fish 8 fish, then catch and release £40
Day 4 fish 4 fish, then catch and release £34
Senior citizen 6 fish, then catch and release £34
Sporting Catch and release only, barbless flies £28

Boat hire

Boat hire is paid on top of your permit, not instead of it.

Boat Price
Day boat £32
Half day (before or after 2pm) £25
Single-manned day £20
Single-manned half day £17
Sunset boat (after 6pm) £17
Wheelyboat (Blue Badge holders) £23

Walk-in boats carry a 10% surcharge, so book ahead.

Season tickets

  • Gold, £1,330: 8 fish plus catch and release, boat and bank, 500 fish season limit
  • Silver, £910: 8 fish from the boat, 6 from the bank, 180 fish season limit
  • Bronze, £820: 4 fish plus catch and release, 65 fish season limit
  • Sporting, £720: catch and release only

Season tickets need a passport-style photo. Silver and Gold also cover predator lure fishing (see the pike section).

How to book

  1. Buy an Environment Agency rod licence on GOV.UK. A 2-rod trout and coarse licence costs £7.30 for 1 day, £14.70 for 8 days or £36.80 for 12 months. Juniors aged 13 to 16 get one free, and under-13s don’t need one. See how the rod licence works.
  2. Choose a trout permit or a predator permit.
  3. Book boat and permit online through the fishery’s trout fishing page, or buy a day permit at the tackle shop. Evening boats are bookable on the day only.
  4. If taking a boat, watch the boat safety video, required every three months.
  5. Submit the online catch return after a trout session.

A sporting permit with a single-manned boat comes to £48. Two anglers on 8-fish permits sharing a day boat pay £56 each (£40 plus half of £32).

Prices are the operator’s 2026 figures, so check with the fishery before you travel.

Rutland Water Fly Fishing: Bank or Boat, and When to Go

Rutland is getting 71,000 trout in 2026, but not evenly. The 2026 stocking policy puts fewer fish in during July and August and more from September.

The stocking calendar

  • February to March: stocking starts ahead of the 14 March opening.
  • July and August: fewer stockings.
  • September to October: heavier stocking.
  • October and November: grown-on browns of 4lb (1.8kg) to 10lb-plus show from bank and boat. All browns go back alive.

Rainbows go in mainly at 750g and 900g. For Rutland Water fly fishing aimed at a big brown, the fishery points to October and November.

Bank or boat

Bank Boat
Cost Permit only Permit plus boat, from £17
Access First light to last light; some zones closed in winter or until 31 March Water beyond casting range
Wading and kit Thigh-deep maximum, no wading on the dam face, no float tubes or belly boats Lifejacket compulsory, no waders in boats
Key rules No fishing within 50m of the nature reserve bank or hides No anchoring in the main basin, keep 50m from bank anglers, no fishing with the engine running

Tactics within the rules

On a catch and release or sporting permit, rudder, trolling and side oar fishing are banned, so plan to drift. Hooks must be barbless, with no doubles or trebles, and 8lb-plus line is recommended.

Drift side-on to the wind from a boat. From the bank, fish a floating line in warmer months and go slower and deeper in cold water. A team of three flies stays inside the four-hook-point limit. For current patterns, read the fishery’s reports or ask in the tackle shop.

Best for boat: covering open water and autumn browns. Best for bank: budget days once the spring closures lift. Skip the bank if: your chosen zone is shut for winter.

Rutland Water Hotspots and the Angler’s Map Restrictions

A bank mark that is shut until April costs you a long walk and a lost morning. At Rutland, the angler’s map is the real hotspot guide, because it shows where you can fish as well as where the named areas are.

Areas marked on the map include:

  • Normanton Church
  • Pontoon Bay
  • Whitwell Creek
  • Ernies Point
  • The Dam
  • Fantasy Island
  • Old Hall Point
  • Hambleton Wood
  • Barnsdale Bay

The map marks these restriction types:

  • banks with no fishing all year
  • banks with no bank fishing from 1 November to 31 March
  • banks with no bank fishing from opening day to 31 March
  • areas with no boat fishing from 1 November to 31 March
  • boats kept at least 50m from the nature reserve bank
  • no boats past the buoys 100m from the dam
  • no boats in the sailing club area

On top of that, the bank rules ban fishing from public car park frontages at weekends, bank holidays and busy times, and there is no overnight fishing.

The online map is dated February 2025, so ask for the current version at the lodge or on the fishery website. Pick two or three marks from it, check each against the dates, and have a back-up. Check with the fishery before you travel.

Rutland Pike Fishing: Permits, Dates and Predator Rules

You can fly fish for pike at Rutland from May, but you can’t cast a spinner at them on any date. The predator rules are specific, and most of them concern method and fish welfare.

Season windows (all boat only)

Method Dates
Fly only, no lures 1 May 2026 to 31 January 2027
Lure and fly 1 September 2026 to 31 January 2027
Sea deadbait 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027

The operator’s predator fishing page asks anglers to check dates carefully before booking. These windows are the fishery’s own rules and sit apart from the statutory coarse close season, explained in our guide on how UK fishing seasons work.

Permits

A daily predator permit costs £34. The £420 predator season ticket covers Rutland, Grafham Water, Pitsford, Draycote Water and Hollowell. Silver and Gold trout season tickets also allow lure fishing for predators. Boat hire is extra, at the prices listed above.

The predator rules

The fishery rulebook sets out:

  • barbless or de-barbed hooks only
  • all pike, perch and zander returned alive
  • wire trace for pike; fluorocarbon allowed for zander and perch
  • any lure except spinners
  • spoons longer than 5 inches (12.7cm)
  • flies over 10cm, on a wire trace
  • no live baiting
  • dead sea fish baits over 18cm from 1 October, excluding lamprey
  • unhooking mat and suitable net compulsory
  • maximum two rods from the boat
  • no trolling under power
  • no bait boats
  • no trout and predator fishing from the same boat

For Rutland pike fishing in October, pack a wire trace, sea deadbaits over 18cm, an unhooking mat and a big net, with every hook barbless or de-barbed. Unhook on the mat, keep the fish wet, and have long forceps to hand before the first run.

The verdict: if you only have September to January free, pike fishing at Rutland is a boat day with lures or sea deadbaits. If you want predators before September, it is fly only.

Rules, Safety and Bringing Juniors to Rutland

Accompanied children fish free within your permit rules at Rutland, so a youngster’s first trout session costs no more than your own ticket.

Trout rules

  • one rod, with a maximum of four hook points
  • no trebles
  • all brown trout returned alive
  • when you reach your bag limit, stop, switch to catch and release, or buy another permit
  • no gutting fish on the bank or in the boat
  • an online catch return after fishing

Boat safety

  • fishery-supplied lifejackets are compulsory
  • no waders in boats
  • you must be 18 or over to hire a single or two-person boat
  • all fishing stops above force 6 (25mph)
  • single-manned, junior and wheelyboat limit is 18mph, at ranger discretion
  • dogs are allowed with their own lifejacket

Juniors

Under-18s can share a fee-paying adult’s bag limit. Juniors aged 7 to 17 can boat fish with an adult over 21 and a fitted lifejacket, at ranger discretion. Under-13s need no rod licence, and 13 to 16-year-olds need the free junior licence. For a first lesson, the operator runs beginner fly courses at Rutland, Grafham and Pitsford.

Check the forecast wind speed before booking a junior or single-manned boat, because 18mph is the cut-off. Check with the fishery before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fish Rutland Water from the bank?

Yes for trout, fly only, on a day or season permit, from first light to last light. Some zones close to bank fishing in winter or until 31 March, so check the current angler's map. Predator fishing at Rutland is boat only. See the hotspots section above for the restriction types.

Can you use live bait or spinners for pike at Rutland Water?

No to both. Live baiting is banned and so are spinners of any size. Other lures are allowed, but spoons must be longer than 5 inches. Dead sea fish baits over 18cm, excluding lamprey, are allowed from the boat between 1 October and 31 January.

Is there coarse fishing at Rutland Water?

The operator sells trout and predator permits only, and no coarse or bream permit is listed on its pages. If you want coarse fishing at Rutland, ask the fishery directly before you travel rather than relying on older guides.

Can you keep brown trout at Rutland Water?

No. All brown trout must be returned alive, whatever permit you hold. Rainbow trout count towards your bag limit on a kill permit, and once you reach it you stop, switch to catch and release, or buy another permit.

What other reservoirs are like Rutland Water?

The same predator season ticket covers Grafham Water, Pitsford, Draycote Water and Hollowell. For other large stillwater reservoirs, see our guides to Chew Valley Lake, Hanningfield Reservoir and Bewl Water.
