Fishing Bewl Water

By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026

Bewl’s 2026/27 trout season runs from 18 March 2026 to 14 February 2027, close to eleven months of fly fishing. Pike have a season of their own, from 31 October 2026 to 22 February 2027.

Bewl Water fishing is really two fisheries on one 800-acre Kent reservoir. You can catch stocked rainbow trout, pike and perch, plus bream, roach and tench. The bank is fly only, boats open up other methods, and you book online or at the Fishing Lodge.

Below you will find the current ticket table, the trout and predator rules, tactics by season and where the fish sit.

The trout fishery has run since the reservoir opened in 1975. Rainbows go in regularly, and the June 2026 report mentions another 3,000 fish. The venue publishes no stocking sizes or schedule, so treat stocking figures quoted elsewhere with caution.

For other big stillwaters, see our guides to UK lakes and reservoirs and our Kent fishing guide. Dates change each season, so check with the fishery before you travel.

The 54 boats take one to three anglers each, and the hirer must be 18 or over. Full terms are on the venue’s trout fishing page and predator fishing page.

No ticket includes the Environment Agency rod licence. On GOV.UK it costs £7.30 for 1 day, £14.70 for 8 days or £36.80 for 12 months (£24.50 if you are 66 or over or disabled). Juniors aged 13 to 16 need one too, but it is free. Prices change, so check GOV.UK before you buy; our fishing licence guide has the detail.

The tackle shop also sells permits. Its page gives an 8.15am opening and a venue blog says 7am, so confirm before an early start. These are the operator’s 2026/27 prices; check with the fishery before you travel.

Which Bewl Water Ticket Do You Need?

The cheapest ticket is often the right one, unless you want to fish bait.

  • If you fly fish and are happy to return everything, buy the bank catch and release ticket.
  • If you want a trout or two for the table, buy the Two Trout or Eight Trout bank ticket.
  • If you want bait, Powerbait or lures for trout, book the any-method boat, because the bank is fly only.
  • If you want winter pike or perch on a budget, use the bank catch and release ticket in the predator season, or book the predator boat for open water.
  • If you fish very often, weigh up the £800 season ticket. Against £32.50 to £37.50 day tickets it breaks even at roughly 22 to 25 visits.

On a first visit, start on the bank and save the boat until you know the water. The venue itself calls the bank the simplest start.

Bewl Water Fly Fishing: Trout Tactics Through the Season

Depth matters more than pattern. In June 2026 the fishery reported trout feeding in the top two feet; by July’s heat they had dropped to between 5 and 30 feet down. Bewl Water fly fishing is mostly a matter of finding that feeding depth, then choosing a fly that suits it.

This table pulls together the rangers’ seasonal guidance and the 2026 fishing reports.

Season Where the fish are What to use
Spring (from mid-March) Spread out, high in the water Buzzers, damsels and nymphs fished slowly
Early summer Near the surface Dry flies from May; mini yellow blobs and white fry boobies did well in June 2026
High summer Deep in hot weather, best early and late Brighter flies and lures; any-method boats at anchor with bait
Autumn Variable Small game spoons, Powerbait on a float, blobs, boobies, Cat’s Whiskers
Winter (to mid-February) Deeper, as cold northerlies make it harder going Slower, deeper presentations

From the bank you fish fly only, with barbless hooks, between sunrise and sunset. When no fish are showing, the rangers advise boat anglers to anchor over the deeper channels. Powerbait on a float catches all year, but only from an any-method boat.

Standard reservoir technique applies too. Work buzzers on a floating line with a slow figure-of-eight retrieve, or let them drift on the breeze. A tippet of around 6 to 8lb breaking strain suits most stocked rainbows; step up when you fish lures deep.

To compare another big stocked trout water, see our guides to Grafham Water and Rutland Water.

Bewl Water Pike: Season, Rules and Methods

An older tourism listing still gives the pike season as 30 October to 31 January. For 2026/27, Bewl Water pike fishing runs from 31 October 2026 to 22 February 2027, from boat or bank.

The venue says pike up to 42lb (about 19kg) have been caught here. The rules are strict, and the kit list is not optional:

  • An unhooking mat and wire cutters or long-nosed pliers are mandatory
  • Use a wire trace for pike and a main line of at least 10lb breaking strain (see our pike wire traces explainer)
  • Trebles must be barbless or semi-barbless
  • One rod only when deadbaiting, and no livebaiting
  • No pike fishing when the water is above 17C
  • Return pike immediately and carefully, fill in a catch return and carry an EA licence

The 17C rule exists because warm water holds less oxygen, so pike recover badly after a fight in it.

Allowed methods are sea or coarse deadbaits on one rod, float-fished deadbaits, and lures such as jigs, soft plastics and crankbaits. A venue beginner blog mentions lures or plugs only, so go by the predator page and check with the rangers if in doubt.

Outside the season, pike fishing is only at the Rangers’ discretion, by email request. No pike event dates for 2026/27 are published, so contact the fishery if you want one.

November suits lures and deadbaits, and by February fish are moving towards their spawning areas. Plan around December and January: that is the peak, and the biggest pike often come in the coldest weeks.

Perch and Other Coarse Fish at Bewl

The venue says perch over 46cm are taken regularly. That makes them worth a trip of their own.

Methods that suit Bewl’s perch include:

  • Drop-shot soft plastics (our drop-shot rig guide shows the setup)
  • Shads and grubs on light jig heads
  • Worms under a float
  • Small spinners and spoons

The July 2026 fishing report described perch as superb around the 2-metre mark, on small spinners, maggots and flies. Perch are fished on predator tickets, so the season and catch and release rules from the pike section above apply.

Bream, roach, ruffe, tench and eels are also present. The venue’s fishing pages list no separate coarse ticket, so ask the fishery before you plan a session for them. For the legal close seasons, see our fishing seasons guide.

Best for: light-lure anglers chasing big perch. Skip if: you want a bagging session on silver fish.

Where to Fish on Bewl Water by Season

Thirteen miles of bank is a lot of water to fish blind. The venue names a few areas, and the rest comes down to depth.

  • Spring trout: fish are spread out early in the season, so cover water rather than sitting on one spot.
  • Summer trout: the rangers name Chingley deep and the areas near the Main Bowl as the most productive. In hot spells, expect fish 5 to 30 feet down.
  • Perch: look for structure around the old farm buildings and bridge remains on the reservoir bed, and fish around 2 metres in summer.
  • Late-winter pike: in February fish move towards their spawning areas.

For current form, ask at the Fishing Lodge or tackle shop, and read the venue’s monthly fishing reports before you go.

If the fish are not showing, go deeper before you change fly.

Kayak Fishing, Tuition and Bringing Children

You can bring your own kayak to Bewl, if it meets the spec. Only purpose-built, rigid, sit-on-top fishing kayaks of at least 10ft are allowed, from 18 March 2026 to 14 February 2027. You need proof of insurance and a buoyancy aid, and you check in at the Fishing Lodge. Come off the water at force 5 (19mph) or if there is thunder. Kayak prices are in the ticket table above.

Fly tuition is a half day (3 hours) with a GAIA-qualified instructor, for ages 12 and up, with the day ticket included. It costs £180 for one, £270 for two, £310 for three and £340 for four.

Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult and cannot operate a boat. Juniors aged 13 to 16 still need an EA licence, which is free.

Best for: new fly anglers who want the basics right on day one. Skip if: you can already cast a full line and just need a ticket.

Before You Go: A Bewl Water Checklist

Three missing items can end a Bewl day before it starts: a rod licence, a predator reservation and an unhooking mat. Run through this before you leave:

  • EA rod licence bought
  • Ticket booked, with predator sessions reserved
  • Pike kit packed: mat, cutters, wire trace and 10lb+ main line
  • Barbless hooks for trout, barbless or semi-barbless trebles for pike
  • Tackle shop opening time checked
  • Latest fishing report read, and details confirmed with the fishery before you travel

If Bewl does not suit, compare it with our Chew Valley Lake guide, or browse the rest in our UK lakes and reservoirs hub.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fish for pike from the bank at Bewl Water?

Yes. During the predator season, from 31 October 2026 to 22 February 2027, bank pike fishing is covered by the £27.50 catch and release bank ticket. Every fish goes back alive, and the mandatory pike kit applies. See the pike section of this guide for the full rules.

Is livebaiting allowed at Bewl Water?

No. Livebaiting is banned. You can fish sea or coarse deadbaits, but on one rod only, and treble hooks must be barbless or semi-barbless. Lures such as jigs, soft plastics and crankbaits are also allowed during the predator season.

Can you use bait for trout at Bewl Water?

Not from the bank, which is fly only with barbless hooks. Bait and Powerbait for trout need the any-method boat, which costs £70 for one angler including an eight-trout permit and parking. See the ticket table above for two- and three-angler prices.

Can you fish Bewl Water in February and March?

Partly. Trout tickets run to 14 February 2027, and the 2026/27 season opened on 18 March 2026. Predator fishing runs to 22 February 2027. The venue sets next season's dates, so check before you travel, and see our fishing seasons guide for the legal close seasons.
