Sea Fishing on the Kent Coast
By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026
Most guides to Kent marks cover one beach at a time, and plenty still carry ticket prices and access details that nobody has checked in years.
For sea fishing in Kent, start with Deal Pier: it is the most reliable bookable mark, with published 2026/27 fees and hours. Dover’s harbour walls are the big-fish structures, but confirm access with Dover Sea Angling Association first. Walmer, Shakespeare Beach and Reculver are open beach and reef marks with no ticket. Below are the marks compared, the seasons, the current bass rules and the tide and safety points that matter.
Kent Shore Marks Compared
If you only have a day, this table tells you where to start.
| Mark | Ground | Access | Main species | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deal Pier | Pier stem over mixed ground | Ticketed per rod, staffed | Seasonal Kent species | Families and beginners |
| Walmer Flats | Mixed seabed, beach | Open beach, no ticket | Whiting, dab, codling (winter); sole (summer) | Winter evenings with lug |
| Dover Southern Breakwater | Harbour wall in a strong tide | Historically by boat via Dover Sea Angling Association; current terms unverified | Bass in summer, cod from October | Experienced anglers with heavy gear |
| Shakespeare Beach, Dover | Beach with a rocky western end | Open beach, no ticket | Bass, thornback ray, dabs, wrasse | Bass at first and last light |
| Reculver and Herne Bay | Broken rock and sand, shallow | Open beach; pay car park by the towers | Rays, smooth hounds, bass; whiting in winter | Spring to autumn ray sessions |
Access at piers and harbour walls changes, so check with the operator before you travel.
Dungeness has its own Dungeness beach fishing guide. The UK sea marks hub covers every other region, and the Kent fishing guide, including freshwater covers the rest of the county.
Deal Pier Fishing: Hours, Fees and Rules for 2026/27
Deal Pier is one of the few Kent marks where you know the price before you leave home. Dover District Council publishes the Deal Pier fishing fees, hours and rules on its Fishing on Deal Pier page, checked for this guide in October 2026.
| Season | Adult, per rod | Concession, per rod |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (April to November) | £8.30 | £4.20 |
| Winter (December to March) | £6.70 | £3.20 |
Drop nets and hand lines cost £1.50. Concessions cover under 16s, unemployed people, seniors, disabled anglers and students, with proof.
Hours. From April to November the pier opens 8am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and 8am to midnight on Friday and Saturday. From December to March it closes at 6pm Sunday to Thursday, with the same midnight close on Friday and Saturday. The council’s own fee table lists a 9pm summer close Monday to Thursday, so check the time on the day.
Tickets. Sold at the pier entrance or online, a ticket covers one full day of fishing, stays valid for three months from issue, and needs ID.
Rules on the pier:
- Fish only on the permitted sections of the stem.
- Stop fishing 30 minutes before closing and be off the pier by closing time.
- The lower deck is closed unless authorised, and the south side of the lower deck is reached via the attendant.
Night fishing is by private all-night booking only: 10pm to 6am, Sunday to Thursday, for £310, booked online. The council lists event closures on the same page (the 2026 rowing championships, for example, stopped fishing for a day in September), so check it before you travel.
If you are new to Kent sea fishing or have children with you, start here. Call the pier office on 01304 363815 or email dealpier@dover.gov.uk before you travel.
Dover: Southern Breakwater, Admiralty Pier and Shakespeare Beach
The Southern Breakwater is the mark every Kent sea angler has heard of, and the one with the least reliable information online.
Southern Breakwater
Dover breakwater fishing has historically meant a boat trip from the Dump Head steps, with sailings arranged through Dover Sea Angling Association and cancelled in strong wind. Current sailing days, prices and any permit requirement could not be verified for this guide, so contact Dover Sea Angling Association before you plan anything.
Published guidance on the fishing describes a fierce tide on the front wall, flooding north and ebbing south, with eddies around high water. Leads of 6 to 7oz are standard. Bass are the summer target, and cod show from October.
Admiralty Pier
Dover Sea Angling Association worked with the Angling Trust to reopen Admiralty Pier for fishing in early 2022, with the club managing access (Angling Trust, 2022). Current terms are unconfirmed, so check with the club here too.
Shakespeare Beach
West of the port, reached via the Western Docks and Snargate Street, Shakespeare Beach fishes for bass, thornback ray, dabs, dogfish, pouting, wrasse, plaice and pollack. The rocky western end eats leads, so use a rotten-bottom rig with a weak link. Bass fish best two hours either side of low water, on peeler crab or float-fished ragworm at first and last light.
If the breakwater boat is off, Shakespeare Beach fishes the same tide on your own terms.
Walmer Flats: Winter Codling and Summer Flatfish
An onshore gale can fill Walmer with weed for days, so timing matters more than tackle here.
Walmer sits just south of Deal over a mixed seabed. In winter it produces pouting, dogfish, whiting, dab, flounder, rockling and codling. Summer is quieter, with sole and the odd plaice. The tide floods north and ebbs south. With no ticket to buy and Deal a short way up the coast, it is the obvious fallback when the pier is busy or closed for an event.
Peeler crab and yellowtail lugworm are the top baits, with a squid tip added for codling. A three-hook mono paternoster rig covers winter whiting and codling. Typical hooks are size 1 to 2/0 for codling, dropping smaller when whiting and dabs are the main target.
Best for a winter evening with fresh lug. Skip it in the days after a big onshore blow.
Reculver and Herne Bay: Rays and Hounds on the North Kent Coast
The rays at Reculver feed over ground so shallow that casting distance often decides the session.
The seabed here is broken rock with sandy patches, and two areas close to the towers produce rays and smooth hounds. Further west, the promenade outside the Kings Hall at Herne Bay fishes over broken, shallow ground too, so a long cast helps. Kent and Essex IFCA lists thornback ray, smooth hound and bass among the common recreational catches in its district, alongside grey mullet and cod.
The season runs from spring to November, and whiting take over in winter. For rays, use fish baits: bluey, herring, squid or a lug wrap. Use crab for bass and hounds.
Sea Angler’s Reculver guide notes that summer crowds make early and late sessions the better bet, and that fish move in as the shore crabs start to moult. There is a car park by the towers. Charges apply, so check the signage.
For rays and hounds from the Kent shore, try this stretch first, provided you can cast a fair distance.
What to Catch in Kent, Season by Season
The species change with the water temperature, so the mark you pick in July is not the one you want in December.
| Season | Main species | Marks to try | Top baits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (April to May) | Rays and smooth hounds arriving; bass can be kept again from 1 April | Reculver and Herne Bay | Crab, fish baits |
| Summer (June to August) | Bass, smooth hound, thornback ray, sole | Shakespeare Beach, Dover breakwater, Walmer | Peeler crab, ragworm |
| Autumn (September to November) | Cod from October; rays still at Reculver into November | Dover breakwater, Reculver | Lug, squid |
| Winter (December to March) | Whiting, codling, dab, pouting | Walmer, Reculver | Lug, squid tip |
Two dates anchor the calendar: bass are catch-and-release only from 1 February to 31 March, and cod start showing on the Dover breakwater from October. For more on timing, see the bass season guide and the cod season guide.
Bass Rules and Minimum Sizes in Kent
From the shore, a bass you catch on 15 March has to go back, however big it is.
Under the GOV.UK bass guidance for 2026, recreational bass fishing from 1 February to 31 March is catch-and-release only, by rod and line or handline, and that includes shore fishing. The rule covers the ICES areas around Kent (4b, 4c and 7d). Outside that period you may keep three bass per day, as amended by The Sea Fisheries (Amendment) Regulations 2026. The minimum size is 42cm. The full picture is in our UK bass fishing regulations guide.
Kent and Essex IFCA publishes minimum sizes for the species most often kept from the Kent shore:
| Species | Minimum size |
|---|---|
| Bass | 42cm |
| Cod | 35cm |
| Sole | 24cm |
| Plaice | 27cm |
| Whiting | 27cm |
| Pollack | 30cm |
That page does not list flounder, so check the Kent and Essex IFCA byelaw before keeping one.
Measure from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail, and carry a measure. Return undersized fish quickly, with wet hands. Rules change, so check GOV.UK and Kent and Essex IFCA before you fish.
Tides and Safety on the Kent Coast
On the Dover front wall the tide is described as fierce, which is why 6 to 7oz leads are standard there. Plan around the tide table, not the clock.
- Know the run. At Walmer and Dover the tide floods north and ebbs south, with eddies around high water at the breakwater. Use grip leads when it runs hard. Our guide to tides for sea fishing explains the basics.
- Watch the wind. Avoid exposed walls and steps in strong wind. The breakwater boat has historically not sailed in high wind anyway.
- Expect weed after gales. Onshore blows fill Walmer with weed.
- Cover the basics. Tell someone where you are, wear grippy footwear on wet steps and rock, and carry a headtorch at night.
- In an emergency at sea or on the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
For marks further afield, compare Kent with the Norfolk coast, the Yorkshire coast and Weymouth and Portland.
