Fishing the River Eden
By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026
River Eden fishing means wild brown trout, grayling, Atlantic salmon and sea trout, with chub and dace on the lower river. The Eden runs north through Cumbria from the Kirkby Stephen area, past Appleby and Penrith, to Carlisle and the Solway. This is the Cumbrian Eden, not the River Eden in Kent.
One rule catches visitors out. The Eden has its own salmon byelaws: a close season of 15 October to 14 January instead of the North West’s 1 November to 31 January, and no salmon may be killed at any point in the season.
Below you will find each reach and who controls it, the tickets on sale, the game and coarse rules, and a licence checklist.
The River at a Glance: Upper, Middle and Lower Eden
How can one river be a fly-only wild trout stream at Kirkby Stephen and a 27-pool salmon fishery at Carlisle? The Eden changes character as it runs north, and each reach has its own fish and its own clubs.
- Upper Eden: the Kirkby Stephen area, plus the Belah and Scandal Beck tributaries. Small, wild brown trout water fished on the fly.
- Middle Eden: Appleby down to the Penrith area, where the Eamont and Lowther join. Trout and grayling dominate.
- Lower Eden: Carlisle downstream towards the Solway. Salmon and sea trout run through here, and the slower water also holds chub, dace and grayling.
The Eden and its tributaries are designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and JNCC lists Atlantic salmon among the SAC’s qualifying species. It is one more reason to treat salmon release and clean kit as part of fishing here, not optional extras.

Who Controls the Fishing: Clubs by Stretch
Finding the Eden on a map takes seconds. Working out who controls the bank in front of you takes longer.
The River Eden Fisheries Association (REDFA, at edenfishing.co.uk) is the umbrella body for the river’s clubs and the best place to find current contacts. Its member list maps onto the river like this:
| Club | Reach | Main species | Visitor access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kirkby Stephen & District AA | Upper Eden, about 9 miles, plus about 4 miles of Belah and Scandal Beck | Wild brown trout, fly | Day tickets available; price not published |
| Appleby AA | Appleby area | Trout, grayling | Day tickets currently suspended; Great Ormside and Lyvennet Crossrigg are members only |
| Penrith AA | Eden, Eamont and Lowther | Wild brown trout, grayling (salmon and sea trout for members) | Day and week tickets |
| Yorkshire Flyfishers | Around Penrith | Not stated | Contact the club |
| Brampton AA | River Irthing (tributary) | Not stated | Contact the club |
| Carlisle AA | West of the M6 to the Solway, about 7 miles, 27 pools | Salmon, trout, coarse | Salmon permits sold |
| Carlisle & District Coarse Angling Club (CADCAC) | Lower river | Chub, dace, grayling | Contact the club |
| Eden Owners Association | Riparian owners | Not stated | Contact REDFA |
Some water is held privately by estates and riparian owners. If a stretch is not on a club map, ask REDFA or the nearest club who controls it, and treat no part of the Eden as free to fish unless the owner confirms it.
Access and prices change, so check with the club before you travel.
Day Tickets and Permits: What Visitors Can Actually Buy
For a visitor day on the Eden, two clubs are the realistic starting points: Penrith AA for trout and grayling, and Carlisle AA for salmon. What each ticket covers matters more than what it costs.
Penrith AA sells day and week tickets for its Eden, Eamont and Lowther water. They cover wild brown trout and grayling only, because salmon and sea trout are reserved for members. The club listed them at £15 a day and £50 a week when checked in October 2026.
Carlisle AA sells salmon permits, listed at £30 a day when checked in October 2026. Buy them through Fishpal or from Carlisle Tourist Information Centre (01228 598596).
Appleby AA has day tickets suspended, according to its permits page. Adult membership has a waiting list, with fees listed at £60 for residents and £105 for non-residents, plus a £20 joining fee.
Kirkby Stephen & District AA offers day tickets but does not publish the price, so contact the club directly.
A club permit is not a rod licence. You need both, plus permission from the club or landowner for the exact water you fish.
If you only want trout and grayling, start with Penrith. For salmon, Carlisle is the obvious visitor option. Prices and ticket availability change, so confirm with the club before you travel.
River Eden Salmon Fishing: Seasons, Catch and Release and Methods
River Eden salmon fishing opens on 15 January, while the rest of the North West stays closed until 1 February. The catch is that every salmon you hook must go back.
The Environment Agency’s North West byelaws set the rules:
- Close season: 15 October to 14 January on the Eden, including its tributaries and connected waters. Across the rest of the region it is 1 November to 31 January.
- Kill ban: you must not kill any salmon from 15 January to 14 October, which is the whole season.
- Catch returns: required from salmon and migratory trout licence holders.
- Lure limits: the Eden is exempt from the region’s after-31 August limits on lure weight and hook gape. Club rules can still be stricter.
Carlisle AA’s salmon season matches the byelaws, with fly and lure only before 16 June and catch returns due within 14 days.
Sea trout fall under the migratory trout rules, with a close season of 1 October to 31 March. On the Eden you must not kill more than two migratory trout between 1 April and 30 September, or any female migratory trout from 10 to 30 September. The minimum size is 30cm. For run timing and local tactics, ask the clubs.
Returned fish must go back immediately with the least injury possible, so keep them in the water and unhook quickly. Our catch and release guide covers technique.
Eden Trout Fishing and Winter Grayling
Eden trout fishing starts in mid-March, not April. The byelaw close season for brown trout ends on 14 March, and Appleby AA and Carlisle AA both open their trout season on 15 March.
Seasons:
- Brown trout byelaw close season: 1 October to 14 March.
- Club trout seasons (Appleby AA, Carlisle AA): 15 March to 30 September.
- Grayling on Appleby water: 16 June to 14 March.
On Appleby water, grayling stay open after the trout close on 30 September, so the fly rod has work through the winter.
Methods and limits: from 15 March to 15 June on rivers, the byelaws only allow trout fishing with minnow, worm, shrimp, prawn or an artificial fly or lure on a hook. The byelaw minimum size for brown trout is 20cm. Clubs go further. Appleby AA bans spinning, maggots, corn and bread, allows one rod and sets a limit of two fish between 10in and 15in (25cm to 38cm). Carlisle AA bans spinning for non-migratory trout.
Wild fish: Carlisle AA and Kirkby Stephen & District AA say their waters are not stocked. Appleby AA reports trout over 3lb (1.4kg) and grayling of 2lb to 3lb, and recommends barbless hooks and catch and release.
Kirkby Stephen’s water is fly fishing, and Appleby’s no-spinning rule points the same way. For chalkstream trout, compare our River Kennet guide and the Hampshire Avon.
Coarse Fishing on the Lower Eden
If you prefer a float or feeder, the lower Eden around Carlisle holds chub, dace and grayling. Carlisle & District Coarse Angling Club (CADCAC) holds lower river fisheries, and Carlisle AA’s coarse season runs 16 June to 14 March.
The law is simple. The coarse close season on rivers runs 15 March to 15 June, and the North West byelaws ban keepnets on rivers during it. Our close season rules page covers the detail.
Bait rules vary by club. Appleby AA, for example, bans maggots, corn and bread on its water, so read each club’s rules before you buy bait.
For other coarse rivers, see the River Lee and the Bristol Avon.
Licences and Rules: A Checklist Before You Fish
The costliest mistake on the Eden is buying a trout and coarse licence and then casting for a salmon. That licence does not cover salmon or sea trout.
| Environment Agency licence | 1 day | 8 days | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trout and coarse (2 rods) | £7.30 | £14.70 | £36.80 |
| Salmon and sea trout | £13.50 | £30.50 | £93.10 |
Prices were checked on GOV.UK in October 2026 and change, so confirm them there before you buy. Under 13s need no licence, and 13 to 16 year olds get a free junior licence. Fishing without one can bring a fine of up to £2,500. Our rod licence guide explains the options.
Before you fish:
- Buy the right licence for your target species.
- Pick your club water and buy the permit through Fishpal or the outlet the club names.
- Read the club’s rules and season dates.
- Return every salmon and submit your catch return.
- Clean, check and dry tackle, waders and nets between rivers, as Penrith AA advises, to stop invasive species spreading.
River levels on the Eden can change quickly after rain. Check current conditions, and check with the club before you travel.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep a salmon caught on the River Eden?
No. The North West byelaws ban killing any salmon on the Eden from 15 January to 14 October, which is the whole season. Every salmon must be returned immediately with the least injury possible, and you must submit a catch return.
Where can I buy a day ticket for the River Eden?
Penrith AA sells day and week tickets for trout and grayling, and Carlisle AA sells salmon permits through Fishpal or Carlisle Tourist Information Centre. Appleby AA day tickets are currently suspended. Check each club before you travel.
When is the trout season on the Eden?
Appleby AA and Carlisle AA fish for trout from 15 March to 30 September. The byelaw close season for brown trout runs 1 October to 14 March, and for sea trout 1 October to 31 March. Grayling stay open on Appleby water until 14 March.
Is there a coarse close season on the Eden?
Yes. The coarse close season applies on the Eden, as on all English rivers, from 15 March to 15 June, and keepnets are banned on rivers during that period. Carlisle AA's coarse season runs 16 June to 14 March.
