Fishing in Essex
By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026
Southend Pier runs 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary, and its operator calls it the longest pleasure pier in the world. It is one of four very different ways into fishing in Essex: pre-booked carp and catfish lakes, club waters, lowland rivers such as the Chelmer, Blackwater and Colne, and sea fishing along the coast.
Two things change your plans in 2026. Hanningfield’s trout fishery is closed for low water until the 2027 season, and Chelmsford Angling Association listed its 2026-27 books as sold out in April.
Below is where to fish by type of fishing, then the rules, all checked against official or venue sources on 23 October 2026. For other parts of the UK, see the regions hub.
Where to Fish in Essex: A Quick Guide by Type of Fishing
Pick your type of fishing in the table, then jump to its section.
| Type of fishing | Where in Essex | How you get access | Key thing to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carp and catfish on pre-booked lakes | Par Fishery, West Horndon (example) | Book through the fishery’s calendars | Swim availability |
| Club lake and river coarse fishing | Chelmsford AA waters (14 lakes plus river) | Club membership | 2026-27 books listed sold out as of April 2026 |
| River coarse fishing | The Chelmer, Blackwater, Colne, Crouch and Roach | Depends on who controls the bank | River close season, 15 March to 15 June |
| Trout | Hanningfield Reservoir | Day permit from the operator | Closed until the 2027 season |
| Sea | Southend Pier | Entry plus fishing pass, bought on the day | Marked bays only, 2 rods |
Online directories list more Essex day-ticket commercials, but only venues confirmed at source are named here. Treat a directory listing as a lead and phone the fishery.
With one free day and no club card, you have two dependable options: book a swim on a pre-booked lake well ahead, or take a sea rod to Southend Pier and buy your pass at the entrance.
Essex Fishing Lakes: Day-Ticket and Specimen Venues
Turn up at a specimen carp lake without a booking and you may find every swim taken. The bigger-fish Essex fishing lakes, such as Par Fishery, run on bookings, so check how a venue sells its swims before you check its stock.
Par Fishery at West Horndon, near Brentwood, has two lakes:
- Faraway: about 4 acres, 6 swims, carp to 38lb (17.2kg).
- Tillingham: 4.5 acres, wels catfish to about 85lb (38.6kg) and carp averaging 16 to 23lb.
The fishery states its own catfish record at 105lb. Availability and bookings run through calendars on the fishery’s website. Prices were not verified for this page, so look them up there.
Fish that size need proper handling. Bring a large unhooking mat, use a cradle where the fishery asks for one, and follow its rules on keepnets, sacks and retaining fish.
Before you book any Essex commercial, check:
- whether it is booking-only or turn-up
- whether tickets are day or 24-hour
- whether night fishing is allowed
- rod limits and tackle rules (fishery rules can be stricter than Environment Agency byelaws)
- what is stocked, and to what size
- a current status page or a phone number that gets answered
The Anglian byelaws list no Essex stillwaters under a coarse close season, so lakes can generally fish all year. Individual fisheries can still set their own rules.
Best for: a target-species session with a guaranteed swim. Skip if: you want a spontaneous turn-up session. Check with the fishery before you travel.
Club Fishing in Essex: Chelmsford AA and How Club Books Work
Chelmsford Angling Association’s 2026-27 membership tickets were shown as sold out as of April 2026. A club card gets you a lot of water, but in Essex you have to apply on time to get one.
Chelmsford AA lists 14 lakes plus what it calls miles and miles of river fishing. Tufnell Mere is 17 acres, Boreham Mere 6.5 acres and Braxted Reservoir 6 acres.
The club keeps a lake status board. On 23 October 2026 it showed 12 of 13 listed lakes open, with Boreham Renees Pool closed.
To join, apply online through the club’s website or email tickets@chelmsfordaa.co.uk. Membership prices were not verified for this page, so check them on the club site.
Weigh it up like this:
- Pro: many lakes and river stretches under one membership.
- Con: books can sell out, and once they do you wait a season.
Other Essex towns have their own clubs. To find out who controls a given water, ask in the nearest tackle shop.
If you live near Chelmsford and want regular access to both lakes and river, put the club’s next ticket release in your diary and apply the day it opens.
River Fishing in Essex: The Chelmer, Blackwater, Colne and Lee
Is the river through your town free to fish? That depends on who owns the fishing rights on that bank, field by field.
The Environment Agency’s Anglian byelaw tables name the Chelmer, Blackwater, Colne, Crouch and Roach. On the county’s western edge runs the Lee; see our River Lee guide for access on that river.
A public river is not a free bank. Fishing rights belong to whoever owns or leases each stretch, and clubs such as Chelmsford AA hold river water. Before you set up:
- look for club or fishery signs on gates and stiles
- ask the local tackle shop, or the club that holds nearby water
- check landowner or council notices
This guide does not list any free stretch in Essex, because none could be confirmed from an official source. If you can’t find out who controls a bank, don’t fish it.
Rivers, streams and drains are shut to coarse fishing from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. During those weeks, river anglers can switch to stillwaters and canals. The close-season eel rules are in the rules section below.
River or club lake? A river stretch can cost less but takes more homework on access. A club lake gives you certainty about where you can fish.
Trout Fishing in Essex: Hanningfield Reservoir Closed Until 2027
Essex’s big trout reservoir is not fishing this year. Hanningfield Reservoir’s rainbow trout fishery, run by Waterside Parks, is closed because of low reservoir water levels, and the operator says it will reopen for the 2027 season. No coarse fishing is listed there.
Essex & Suffolk Water promotes Hanningfield as an any-method stillwater trout fishery. For reference, the operator’s 2025 price list was:
- full day, 8 trout: £33
- catch and release: £23
- boat: £34
Expect these to change for 2027. Permits are booked through the operator’s Bookwhen page, and you buy your Environment Agency licence online beforehand. Our Hanningfield Reservoir guide has the full detail.
Two trout rules apply in Essex: a maximum of 2 rods for trout on reservoirs, lakes and ponds, and only artificial wet or dry fly for trout during the coarse close season under the Anglian byelaws.
Check the operator’s fishing page for the confirmed reopening date before you plan a 2027 trip.
Sea Fishing in Essex: Southend Pier and the Coast
Southend Pier is the easiest sea fishing in Essex to get started on. You don’t need a club card or a boat, only a pass bought at the entrance.
Southend Pier rules and passes
The operator’s rules:
- fish only in the marked bays on the south face, first come first served
- maximum 2 rods
- no overhead casting
- a capacity limit applies
- day anglers pack up 45 minutes before closing
- night passes are only for active members of a recognised fishing club, with proof
- children aged 3 to 16 must be with an adult
Entry plus a fishing pass appeared as £10.80 adult and £5.65 child or concession on the operator’s tickets page on 23 October 2026. Confirm the price at the entrance. Opening hours vary with the weather, so phone the pier on 01702 212534 before you set off. There is an angling shop opposite the entrance.
The operator names mackerel, plaice and flounder among the species. Our Southend Pier fishing guide covers baits and timing.
The wider Essex coast
The Kent and Essex IFCA’s angling report for January to May 2022 recorded whiting, dogfish, bass, skate, rays and early smoothound from Essex, with Clacton pier giving the odd small bass, sole and skate and Walton pier slow with whiting and dogfish. Treat that as a 2022 snapshot and check rules and prices with each pier operator.
The same report says IFCA officers patrol piers and hand out minimum size rulers, so know the bass rules below before you keep anything. Across the estuary, fishing in Kent gives you more shore marks.
Best for: beginners and families. Skip if: you want night sessions and are not an active club member.
Essex Fishing Rules: Rod Licence, Close Season, Eels and Bass
A private Essex lake still needs a rod licence: anyone aged 13 or over needs one from the Environment Agency to fish for freshwater fish in England.
Rod licence prices (trout and coarse, up to 2 rods)
| Licence | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 day | £7.30 |
| 8 days | £14.70 |
| 12 months | £36.80 |
| 12 months, aged 66+ or disabled | £24.50 |
| Junior, aged 13 to 16 | Free (licence still needed) |
| 12 months, 3 rods | £55.30 |
Prices are as listed on GOV.UK on 23 October 2026 and change each April. Our fishing licence guide explains how to buy one.
Close season: rivers, streams and drains close to coarse fishing from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. The Anglian byelaws list no Essex stillwaters under a coarse close season, and most canals have none nationally, but fisheries and clubs can add their own. See our fishing seasons guide.
Rod limits: the national byelaws allow up to 4 rods for coarse fish or eels, but the standard licence covers 2 (3 with the 3-rod licence). Trout on reservoirs, lakes and ponds: 2 rods maximum.
Eels: in the Anglian region you can fish for eels all year on waters with no coarse close season. During the river close season, eel fishing is allowed only in listed tidal waters, such as the Colne at East Mills and the Blackwater at Beeleigh Long Weir. Return eels unharmed to the same water, and do not use gorge bait.
Bass: GOV.UK sets a minimum size of 42cm, and rod and line fishing is catch and release only from 1 February to 31 March in the sea areas its guidance lists, with extra restrictions in nursery areas. Check the current daily bag limit on GOV.UK before keeping a fish, or see our bass fishing regulations guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a licence to fish in Essex?
Yes, for freshwater. Anyone aged 13 or over needs an Environment Agency rod licence, including on private lakes, and juniors aged 13 to 16 get theirs free. A 1-day licence was £7.30 on GOV.UK on 23 October 2026, but prices change each April, so check before you buy.
Is there a close season in Essex?
Yes, on rivers, streams and drains, which close to coarse fishing from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. The Anglian byelaws list no Essex stillwaters under a coarse close season, so lakes can generally fish all year, but venues can set their own rules.
Is Hanningfield Reservoir open for fishing?
No. The trout fishery is closed because of low reservoir water levels, and the operator, Waterside Parks, says it will reopen for the 2027 season. See our Hanningfield Reservoir guide for permits and the last published prices.
Can you fish Southend Pier at night?
Only with a night pass, which the operator offers to active members of a recognised fishing club who can show proof. Day anglers must pack up 45 minutes before the pier closes. Phone 01702 212534 to check opening hours.
Where else can I fish near Essex?
Kent sits directly across the Thames Estuary: see fishing in Kent. The regions hub covers the rest of the UK, including fishing in Hampshire on the south coast.
