Fishing Loch Leven
By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026
Trout of Loch Leven’s wild strain have been exported around the world since the mid-19th century. Yet you cannot cast a line from its bank. Loch Leven fishing is boat-only and fly-only for wild brown trout, with pike on selected boats, and every outing leaves from the pier at Kinross, run by Loch Leven Fisheries.
So the booking and the rules come first.
This guide covers the 2026 boat prices, how booking works, the rules (including two that the fishery’s own pages state differently), trout tactics through the season and the pike fishing. Sort those before you travel and the day on the water is yours.
What the Fishing at Loch Leven Is Like
In 1929, anglers took 53,605 trout on the fly from Loch Leven, roughly 15 fish for every acre of water. The loch you fish today is a different place.
Nutrient run-off led to the 1992 algal bloom known as “Scum Saturday”, and phosphate and nitrate inputs have since been cut by more than 60%. Pike were netted hard to protect the trout (about 14,000 in 1903) and, with perch, are now recovering.
The trout are the Leven strain: wild brown trout with pink flesh. They average about 1.5 lb (0.7 kg), and the fishery record stands at 11 lb 3.375 oz, caught by Alan Campbell in May 2013.
The loch covers more than 3,700 acres (1,500 ha) and is a National Nature Reserve. It is not a numbers water, and a flat calm makes for hard going. If you want a bag of stockies, a put-and-take water suits you better. If you want a wild brown trout, this is the place.
Loch Leven Fishing Prices for 2026: Boats, Single Anglers and Evenings
The cheapest day on the loch is a Monday, at £50 for a whole boat.
There is no separate permit at Loch Leven. The boat charge is your fishing charge, and it covers the boat, the outboard and life jackets. Each boat takes two or three anglers. There are no bank permits, so ignore any site that claims to sell them.
These are the official 2026 prices for Loch Leven boat hire, including VAT:
| Session | Boat (2 to 3 anglers) | Single angler |
|---|---|---|
| Day, Monday | £50 | £40 |
| Day, Tuesday to Friday | £65 | £45 |
| Day, Saturday and Sunday | £70 | £50 |
| Evening | £50 | £40 |
| Hourly (minimum 4 hours) | £10 weekday, £15 weekend | £8 weekday, £10 weekend |
What sits behind those numbers:
- Day sessions run from about 9am to 5:30pm.
- Evening boats do not run in winter.
- Rod hire was £30 for 2025/6, and other kit can be arranged with the Fisheries Manager.
- Three anglers sharing a Tuesday to Friday boat pay under £22 each. On a Monday it is under £17.
Prices change each season, so check the scale of charges at fishlochleven.co.uk before you travel.
How to Book a Boat at Loch Leven
Cancel a pre-booked boat within seven days of the outing and you pay in full. Book only when you are sure of the date.
Booking is online and paid up front:
- Choose a day or evening session on the fishery’s Book a Boat calendar, which runs through iBookfishing.
- Pay at booking. The boat is not confirmed until it is paid for.
- Arrive at the pier by 9am for a day session or 6pm for an evening.
- Bring your own drogue (none are supplied), cleaned and dried if it has been on another loch. Life jackets are provided and must be on before you board.
The fishery’s pages disagree on how far ahead a single angler can book: 48 hours on the scale of charges, three days on Book a Boat. If you fish alone, ring the office first.
For card problems or club bookings, ring 01577 863407 or 07599 225940. The pier address is The Pier, Kinross KY13 8UF.
Loch Leven Fishing Rules You Need to Know
The fishery’s own website gives two different trout size limits.
The core rules, from the guidelines page:
- Boat only. Bank fishing is not permitted.
- Fly only for brown trout.
- No trolling, for trout or pike.
- One species per outing. You fish for trout or for pike, not both.
- Keep 100 yards clear of other boats.
- Wear your life jacket at all times on the water.
- There is no limit on the number of trout you keep.
On size, the rules, brown trout and scale of charges pages say trout under 10 inches go back, while the home, Book a Boat and fishing pages say 11 inches. Until the fishery confirms, return anything under 11 inches and you are covered under either rule.
Licensing works differently in each UK nation. At Loch Leven, your permission to fish comes with your boat booking; if you are unsure what else applies, check with the fishery or the Scottish Government. Our fishing licence guide explains how the rules differ across the UK, and the fishing seasons guide covers close seasons.
Sunday fishing is open, with Sunday boats charged at the weekend rate.
Read the rules on the pier noticeboard on the day. They are the final word.
Loch Leven Trout Fishing: Tactics, Flies and Drifts Through the Season
A flat calm is the surest route to a hard day on a loch of 3,700 acres. Wind is your friend.
Loch Leven trout fishing is traditional loch-style fishing from a drifting boat. A typical set-up is:
- A 10ft rod for a 6 or 7 weight line.
- A floating or slow intermediate line.
- A team of wet flies, or wets with a dry on the point.
Set the boat side-on to the wind with the drogue slowing the drift. Fish short casts in front of the boat and work the top dropper through the surface film on the lift, because takes often come as the flies rise. Our trout flies guide covers patterns.
The 2026 season runs from 15 March to early October:
- Early season: cold water, so fish slower and deeper.
- Late spring and summer: buzzers and dries come into their own on a ripple.
- Back end: fish move about and bigger patterns earn their place.
Pick drifts on conditions rather than names. Drift shallower ground along shorelines and around islands where a ripple runs, stay 100 yards from other boats, and ask at the pier where fish showed that week.
Best for anglers who enjoy reading water. Skip it in a forecast flat calm unless your dates are flexible.
Pike Fishing on Loch Leven: Season, Bait and Tackle Rules
In 1903 about 14,000 pike were netted from Loch Leven to protect the trout. Now the fishery reports fish to 26 lb (11.8 kg).
Pike are closed from 14 March to 1 May, with boats on selected winter dates. The fishery names April to June as best, which overlaps the close season, so read it as May and June, with fish moving onto weed beds from mid-June. Under the one-species rule, a pike outing is its own trip.
The pike rules are tight:
- No live bait.
- Deadbaits: sea species only, at least 4 inches, float mandatory, 2 rods maximum, de-barbed hooks no bigger than size 4.
- Lures: at least 5 inches, wire trace (no fluorocarbon), 2 hooks maximum, trebles no bigger than 2/0.
- Mainline of at least 50 lb braid or 25 lb mono.
- No trolling.
The guidelines page bans dead baits from March to October; the pike page allows sea deadbaits. Confirm when you book.
On Windermere I’ve found long forceps and a padded mat matter more than bait choice once trebles are involved (how to unhook a pike).
Lures let you cover water and find fish. Float-fished sea deadbaits suit a slower day over known weed beds.
Planning Your Trip: the Pier, Non-Anglers and Other Lochs Nearby
Put KY13 8UF in the satnav. Every boat leaves from The Pier, Kinross, which is within reach of Edinburgh, Perth and Fife. Our Edinburgh fishing guide covers other waters near the city.
Non-anglers are well catered for. The loch is a National Nature Reserve, the 21 km Loch Leven Heritage Trail runs around it, and RSPB Loch Leven (Vane Farm) sits on the south shore.
If the boats are full or you want a change, try Lake of Menteith, Butterstone Loch or Carron Valley Reservoir, or browse the Perthshire and Central Scotland lochs guide.
Prices, dates and rules change, so check with the fishery before you travel.
