Fishing Loch Ken
By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026
Loch Ken fishing is still open to visitors, and the loch holds pike, perch, roach and bream. What has changed is where you can stand. Since August 2026, bank and boat fishing has been limited to designated zones on a map published by Drax, the hydro operator, so old forum posts about where to fish are no longer a safe guide.
Loch Ken runs for about 9 miles (14 km) through Dumfries and Galloway, fed by the Water of Ken and the Dee and held back at Glenlochar Barrage. It is one of the southern Scotland lochs open to coarse and predator anglers by permit.
Below: the five bank zones and who sells each permit, prices, rules, boats, then pike and coarse tactics.
Where You Can Fish on Loch Ken: The Five Designated Zones
A loch this size now has just five places on its banks where you can fish with a permit. They are set out on a map Drax published in August 2026 and keeps as a live document.
According to the Scottish Federation for Coarse Angling (SFCA), Drax identified who owns the fishing rights and mapped where fishing is allowed. Drax said the aim was responsibly managed fishing, not a ban, after littering, vandalism, campfires and illegal methods. Existing leases were unchanged, and the SFCA says other areas may or may not open later.
| Zone | Who issues permits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fauld O’ Wheat | By prior arrangement only (contact on the Drax map) | No overnight fishing or camping |
| Glenlaggan | Loch Ken Marina, for bank fishing and boat launching | 7am to 7pm; no overnight fishing or camping |
| Crossmichael | Crossmichael Marina, The Thistle Inn, Crossmichael village shop | Bank permits; boat launch permits from the marina |
| Loch Ken Holiday Park | Park shop, residents only | No day visitors |
| West Bank | New Galloway Angling Association, via the village shop and post office in New Galloway | No overnight fishing or camping |
Boats launch from Galloway Activity Centre, Loch Ken Marina or Crossmichael Marina, covered in the boat section below.
For a visiting bank angler, Crossmichael is the best documented option, with prices published online. Glenlaggan and the West Bank need a call or a visit for prices.
Check the current Drax Loch Ken map before you travel, because it is a live document and zones can change.
Loch Ken Permits: Prices and Where to Buy
A day on the Crossmichael frontage costs £10 for an adult, and you can buy it online before you leave home.
| Crossmichael bank permit | Adult | Junior |
|---|---|---|
| Day | £10 | £5 |
| Summer (April to September) | £90 | £45 |
| Winter (October to March) | £60 | £30 |
| Yearly | £120 | £60 |
Online day permits are sold through ePermit only. Paper day permits are sold over the counter at Crossmichael Marina, The Thistle Inn and Crossmichael Shop.
If you fish here often, do the sums. The yearly adult permit costs the same as 12 day tickets, and the winter permit costs the same as six.
Loch Ken Holiday Park sells permits for its own frontage, but only to residents. Its 2026/27 prices are £5 a day or £25 for 5 to 7 days for touring and camping residents, and £25 per person for the stay for caravan holiday home visitors. Under-10s fish free.
Glenlaggan and West Bank prices are not published online in a form we could check. Ask Loch Ken Marina, or the village shop and post office in New Galloway.
Scotland has no rod licence, so the permit is all you need.

Loch Ken Fishing Rules and the Scottish Law Behind Them
You need no rod licence and there is no coarse close season, yet you can still be prosecuted on Loch Ken for taking a fish home.
The Scottish Government confirms there is no rod licence, but you need a permit or the rights holder’s permission. Pike, perch, roach and bream have no weekly or annual close time, and the Sunday ban covers salmon rod fishing, not coarse fish. Brown trout are closed from 7 October to 14 March across Scotland.
Salmon and sea trout seasons vary by river, so check with the permit issuer or Fisheries Management Scotland, and see our fishing seasons guide.
The Drax zone rules sit on top of the law:
- Dawn to dusk only, with no night fishing.
- Killing or removing fish will be prosecuted.
- Juniors must be accompanied by an adult.
- Crayfish you catch must be dispatched humanely and not taken away.
- Litter and antisocial behaviour are reported to the police.
Crossmichael adds a 3-rod maximum, no unattended rods, pre-arranged matches only and no live baits. The Holiday Park allows two lines.
Drax also warns that water levels can rise rapidly because of hydroelectric operations. Take special care if you wade.

Boat Fishing on Loch Ken: Hire, Launching and Registration
Turning up with a boat on the trailer and no registration is the quickest way to lose a day.
All motorised boats on Loch Ken must be registered before launching, at Loch Ken Marina, Parton, DG7 3NE. Engines over 6bhp need insurance documents. The registration page showed last year’s fee when we checked, so confirm the current one with the marina.
Launch only at Galloway Activity Centre, Loch Ken Marina or Crossmichael Marina. A boat launch permit does not cover bank fishing.
No boat? Crossmichael Marina hires two 4m boats with 4hp or 5hp outboards for up to four people: £90 for 24 hours or £45 for 6 hours (collect 9am to 3pm). Fuel and lifejackets are included and no licence is needed.
A boat suits pike anglers chasing drop-offs and bays beyond the bank zones. For a few hours on the roach and perch, a £10 bank ticket does the job. Check with the marina before you travel.
Loch Ken Pike: Tactics and Tackle That Fit the Rules
The Crossmichael rules already give you a shopping list for Loch Ken pike: 15lb minimum main line, a wire trace, an adequate landing net and an unhooking mat at all times. Treat that as the minimum anywhere on the loch.
Add a 2.75lb to 3lb test-curve rod for deadbaits, a 42in landing net, long-nosed forceps and wire cutters.
Live bait is banned at Crossmichael and removing fish is prosecuted, so bring sea deadbaits or frozen coarse deadbaits from a tackle shop. Set two rods at different ranges, one in the margin and one over deeper water. Our pike deadbaiting guide covers the rigs.
Use lures to cover water from a boat or your bank zone, working drop-offs and weed edges. Pike feed hard in autumn and through winter cold spells, and when the water is at its coldest, slow your retrieve right down.
On Windermere I fish deadbaits along the drop-offs in autumn, and drop-offs are the first feature I’d look for on any big stillwater.
Unhook every fish quickly on the mat, keep it wet and return it (how to unhook a pike). For more big predator water, see the pike lochs of the Highlands and Argyll.
If you have one day, buy the Crossmichael ticket, fish two deadbait rods and keep a lure rod ready to search the water between them.
Perch, Roach and Bream on Loch Ken
Loch Ken Holiday Park says bream are now showing alongside the roach and perch, and that fish size appears to be increasing.
Fish a feeder with groundbait and a size 12 to 14 hook for bream, and float-fish maggot or caster for roach. For perch, try small worms or a drop-shot around structure.
Keep within the rod limits: three at Crossmichael, two lines at the Holiday Park. Keepnet rules aren’t published in the sources we checked, so ask the permit issuer first.
The park notes game fishing has gone on here for many years, so remember the brown trout close time.
Loch Ken fishing for silver fish suits families on the Crossmichael frontage, where a junior day ticket is £5 and juniors must be with an adult.
Zones, prices and rules change, so check with the permit issuer or the current Drax map before you travel.
