Fishing Llyn Brenig
By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026
Llyn Brenig fishing is fly-only trout fishing on a 920-acre upland reservoir about 370m up on the Denbigh Moors. Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water runs it from the Visitor Centre near Cerrigydrudion and stocks it weekly from March to September, mostly with rainbows plus some browns reared on site. From October a separate winter pike season opens.
A full adult day ticket is £28.50 at the venue’s 2026 prices. Below you’ll find tickets, rules, boat hire, Brenig fly fishing tactics and the winter pike season, so you arrive with the right kit. Prices, dates and rules change every year, so check with the fishery before you travel.
Llyn Brenig at a Glance: The Water, the Fish and Who It Suits
At roughly 370m on open moorland, Brenig is exposed, so the weather often decides the day before the fish do. That matters most in a boat, as the wind rules below show.
The reservoir covers 920 acres. It was built between 1973 and 1976 and filled in 1979. Stocking runs weekly from March to September, mostly rainbows with some browns reared on site, and a Floy-tag competition puts 300 tagged fish in the water.
A Brenig season ticket also covers Llyn Aled Uchaf (stocked, with spin, worm or fly allowed), plus Cronfa Alwen and Aled Isaf (unstocked, catch and release).
Llyn Brenig suits:
- First-timers, through fly fishing taster sessions at the Visitor Centre
- Boat anglers who want big, open water to drift
- Winter pike anglers
Best for: fly anglers, from beginners on a taster session to boat regulars. Skip if: you want to fish worm or spinner for trout. Brenig is fly only, so try Aled Uchaf instead.
Llyn Brenig Fishing Prices and Tickets for 2026

A full day on neighbouring Aled Uchaf costs £23.00.
The adult season ticket costs the same as about 15 full adult days, so it pays for itself on your 15th visit. It does not cover Brenig pike.
Book online at llynbrenig.com, at the fishing shop (contactless) or at the car park permit machines, or phone 01490 389222. Parking at the Visitor Centre is included with a permit, so give your car registration when you book or arrive.
The venue’s terms say a permit is not valid without an appropriate rod licence. By law you also need a rod licence to fish for trout or pike in Wales. GOV.UK sells the rod licence that covers England and Wales, so buy or check yours before the trip (see our fishing licence guide).
Llyn Brenig fishing prices change every year, so check with the fishery before you travel.
Brenig Fishery Rules: Flies, Hooks, Bag Limits and No-Go Zones
The rule that can make flies already in your box illegal is the lead ban. It is absolute and includes lead in fly dressings, so any weighted fly must use lead-free weight such as tungsten or brass beads.
The venue’s other rules:
- Artificial fly or dapped natural insect only, with one rod
- No treble, double or tandem hooks
- Barbless or de-barbed hooks for catch and release
- No groundbait, feeders, sweetcorn or maggots
- No wading deeper than the thigh
- Bank anglers must not start fishing in the line of a boat that is already drifting
- No fishing from jetties, in front of the Visitor Centre, or by the dam, the fish farm or the buoyed nature reserve
- A catch return is compulsory after every visit, blank days included
A full-day ticket lets you keep six fish, or three on winter and junior tickets. After that you may release up to 12 more before you need another permit.
Brown trout are less clear. The 2026 price list says all browns go back, while the 2025 terms allow one to be kept. Treat browns as catch and release unless the fishery tells you otherwise.
If you tie your own flies, check every weighted pattern for lead wire before the trip.
Brenig Boat Hire: Prices, Wind Limits and Boat Rules
On an exposed moorland reservoir, a booked boat can still stay on the jetty if the wind gets up.
The venue’s 2026 boat prices:
- Two anglers: £30.00
- One angler: £25.00
- Winter boats: £15.00
- Wheelyboat: £16.00 for wheelchair users, £35.00 for able-bodied anglers
- Life-jacket hire: £5.00
Boats run from 14 March to 29 November 2026; book ahead.
Each boat takes at most two anglers and 235kg including kit, with at least one adult aboard. Wear a buoyancy aid at all times (your own must be at least 65N), and don’t stand. Use only the drogues and nets provided, don’t anchor trout boats, land only at the jetty, and bring no private craft.
Keep 40m from other boats and bank anglers, 150m from the osprey nest, 50m from the draw-off tower and 100m from the quarry. Trolling is banned under oars or engine.
Boats are restricted from force 5 (about 17mph), and all boat fishing stops above 25mph. Check the forecast the night before and have a bank plan ready.
Boat or bank? A boat covers far more water; the bank is cheaper, with the same fly-only rules.
Brenig Fly Fishing: Flies and Tactics for the Conditions
Weekly stocking means fresh rainbows for much of the season, and on many stillwaters new stockies take bright, buoyant patterns. Start visible, then go imitative.
An August 2026 club report named daddy long legs, bibio hopper, heather fly, blobs and boobies. It also noted boats kept well clear of the dam wall in low water. One report is only a pointer.
Stillwater methods that fit Brenig’s rules:
- From a boat, drift a team of flies under a drogue along a wind lane
- From the bank, fish the windward shore, where food collects
- In settled, warm weather, fish a floating line with dries or buzzers
- On cold or bright days, switch to an intermediate or sinking line with boobies
Keep weighted flies lead-free and flatten barbs for release.
Fishable areas shift with water level and closures: in October 2026 the west shore was temporarily closed for low water and deep mud. The fishing shop’s same-day advice beats any fixed hotspot list.
If you’re new to stillwater fly fishing, book a taster session at the Visitor Centre first.
Llyn Brenig Pike Fishing 2026-27: Dates, Prices and Rules
The fly-only trout water turns into a winter pike venue, and every pike session must be booked at least a day ahead.
Bank pike runs from 1 October 2026 to 1 March 2027, per the venue’s main fishing page. Its pages give two boat end dates (24 or 30 November 2026), so confirm before booking. Our fishing seasons guide explains close seasons more widely.
The venue’s 2026-27 pike prices:
| Pike ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Boat, one angler | £36.00 |
| Boat, two anglers | £57.00 |
| Winter bank peg (2 rods) | £26.00 |
| Night peg, 6pm to 7am (2 rods, up to three anglers) | £52.00 |
| Extra rod | £13.00 |
Season tickets do not cover pike. The pike terms and conditions require:
- All pike returned
- Dead sea baits only, with no lamprey or smelt
- Lures, plugs and spinners at least 6in (15.2cm)
- Pike flies size 4 or larger, on a single barbless hook, one fly only
- An unhooking mat
- No trolling, and no power while fishing
- Anchoring allowed from pike boats (bring your own); fish finders allowed
- No targeting trout, and a daily catch return
The venue reports big pike, but its pages disagree on weights. The verdict: book a day ahead, pack sea deadbaits and a mat, and confirm boat dates first.
Getting to Llyn Brenig, Facilities and Nearby Trout Lakes
Leave the A55 at junction 27a for Denbigh. Take the A543 towards Pentrefoelas for about 8 miles, turn left onto the B4501 at Llyn Bran, and the Visitor Centre (LL21 9TT) is about 3.7 miles on the left.
The Visitor Centre has a lakeside cafe, a fishing shop selling permits and tackle, a fish cleaning room, an osprey exhibition, taster sessions, wheelyboats and guiding through Llyn Guides. Opening hours vary by season, so check with the fishery before you travel.
If Brenig is blown out, compare other North Wales trout lakes, including Llyn Crafnant, Tan-y-Mynydd and Graiglwyd Springs.
