Fishing Kielder Water
By Alex Clayton · Updated 23 October 2026
Search for a Kielder day permit and you’ll find different prices on different tourism pages and old blogs. Only the operator’s 2026 list is current.
Kielder Water fishing is trout fishing from the bank or from one of 15 motor boats on a reservoir of over 2,000 acres. Waterside Parks runs it for Northumbrian Water. A 2026 full-day permit costs £29, and you need your own rod licence on top.
Below are the 2026 permits and prices, which permit allows bait, fly or catch and release, the boat rules, the named bank areas and the operator’s own trout tactics. Prices were checked on 23 October 2026.
Kielder Water Fishing at a Glance
Kielder is a trout fishery first. Pike and perch live in it, but every one goes back. The core facts below come from the operator’s Kielder page and its 2026 angling rules.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Operator | Waterside Parks (Northumbrian Water and Essex & Suffolk Water), Kielder Waterside, NE48 1BT |
| Water | Over 2,000 acres, about 20 miles of bank along the Lakeside Way, 15 motor boats |
| Species | Stocked rainbow trout and wild brown trout. Coarse fish such as pike and perch must be returned unharmed |
| Wild brown trout season | 1 May to 31 October. Browns under 9in (23cm) go back |
| Bank hours | 6am to 8pm or sunset, whichever is sooner. Winter closing can be earlier, so check |
| Contact | 01434 251000 |
The operator publishes no stocking schedule or stocking numbers. Ring the fishery for recent stocking and catch reports. The fishing seasons guide puts Kielder’s brown trout dates in context.
Kielder Water Permits and 2026 Prices
Arrive with an old price in your head and you’ll be a few pounds short. The operator’s 2026 list is the one that counts.
| Permit | Fish limit | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full day | 8 fish | £29 | £27 concession |
| Credit cruncher | 4 fish | £23 | From 2pm |
| Under-17s | 2 fish | £13 | |
| Catch and release | Optional 2 fish | £22 | Fly and spinning only |
| Two-rod extra | n/a | £5 | Individual angler only |
Boat hire is charged on top of each angler’s permit:
| Boat hire | Price |
|---|---|
| Midweek full day | £18 |
| Midweek half day (1 May to 30 September only) | £15 |
| Weekend full day | £22 |
What the price list doesn’t spell out:
- Concessions: the web page gives the £27 rate to over-65s and Blue Badge holders. The 2026 rules document lists under-18s, state pension recipients, Blue Badge holders and people receiving Disability Living Allowance. Evidence is required, so confirm eligibility when you book.
- Children: up to two under-17s fish free on a parent, grandparent or guardian’s permit, sharing its catch limit. That beats buying junior permits.
- Couples permit: discontinued. Ignore older pages that still list it.
If you fish fly or spinner and want to return most of your fish, the £22 catch-and-release permit is £7 cheaper than the full day. Prices checked 23 October 2026 on the Waterside Parks site. Check with the fishery before you travel.
Bait, Fly or Catch and Release: Which Permit Allows What
At Kielder, releasing a rainbow can break the rules. Whether it does depends on the permit in your pocket.
| Rule | Any-method (bait) permit | Catch-and-release permit |
|---|---|---|
| Methods | Bait on float or ledger with a feeder, plus spinners, spoons and lures | Fly and spinning only |
| Hooks | Single hook only, no multi-hook traces, no doubles or trebles with worm or PowerBait | Barbless or crushed-barb singles, no trebles |
| Releasing trout | Not allowed. All stocked rainbows are retained | Allowed. Optional 2 fish, then stop once the second is kept |
| Banned baits | Live fish such as minnows, natural roe | n/a |
| Kit | Landing net and priest | Knotless micromesh or silicone net, priest if taking fish |
The operator names worm, maggot, PowerBait and sweetcorn as the most popular baits. The PowerBait for trout guide covers single-hook rigs.
Pike and perch go back unharmed on any permit. You sign in and out and record your catch, and taking trout beyond your permit’s limit is a criminal offence that the fishery prosecutes under the Theft Act.
Best for / Skip if: the bait permit suits a first trip with trout for the table. Skip it if you want to release fish.
What Your Kielder Permit Does Not Cover: Rod Licence and the Burns
A Kielder permit is not a rod licence, and it doesn’t cover the water flowing in.
The fishery requires every angler aged 12 or over to hold their own Environment Agency rod licence as well as the permit. GOV.UK only requires one from 13 (free for 13 to 16), so follow the stricter fishery rule. GOV.UK lists a two-rod licence at £7.30 for 1 day, £14.70 for 8 days and £36.80 for 12 months. The page is undated, so check before you buy. The fishing licence guide explains the options.
The feeder burns and the North Tyne need a separate permit, and sources disagree on who sells it. Visit Kielder points to the Tyne Angling Passport (£8 a day through the Tyne Rivers Trust). Forestry England says forest burn permits come through Fish Tyne on 01573 470612. Confirm with one of them before you fish any burn.
Kielder Boat Fishing: Booking, Crew Rules and Safety
Turn up with one adult and a seven-year-old and you won’t get a boat. Kielder boat fishing reaches inlets the bank can’t, but the crew rules are strict.
Book ahead online through Waterside Parks’ Bookwhen page (bookwhen.com/watersideparksnorth), on 01434 251000, or at the Kielder Waterside shop from 6am. Tower Knowe sells bank permits only (from 10am, April to October).
The 2026 boat rules are:
- 2 to 4 people per boat, with at least 2 adults aged 17 or over and at least one person aged 18 or over.
- No children under 8.
- Everyone wears a lifejacket over outer clothing: free from the fishery, or your own if it meets British Standards and the duty ranger approves it.
- No alcohol on the boats or the bank.
- Rangers can cancel boats in bad weather and run a “follow me” procedure back to safety.
The rules exist because Kielder is very cold and deep, with underwater obstructions, and the weather changes fast. With children under 8, book a bank day instead.
Where to Fish Kielder Water: Bank and Boat Hotspots
You don’t need to walk 20 miles of bank. The operator and Visit Kielder name six areas between them.
| Area | Bank or boat | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stockie Bay | Bank | The operator describes it as productive all season |
| Hawkhope | Bank | The operator’s most popular spot, with easy access, and one of several stocking points |
| Kielder Waterside, including the ski bay | Bank | Listed by the operator. Move when water skiing is on |
| Whickhope Inlet and the bank downstream of Tower Knowe | Bank | Suggested by Visit Kielder |
| Stream mouths at Matthew’s Linn and Whickhope | Bank | Visit Kielder suggests them in spring |
| Belling Inlet and Plashett’s Bay | Boat | Named by Visit Kielder as boat areas |
Wading to thigh depth is allowed except from dam walls and where signs say no. When levels are low, keep off soft ground.
For easy access and a stocking point, start at Hawkhope. If it’s busy, try Stockie Bay, which the operator rates as productive all season.
Kielder Trout Fishing Tactics That Work
On a reservoir this size, the rangers’ first tip is to cast short. Upland reservoir trout feed mainly on land-born insects and often patrol close to the bank, according to the operator’s 2026 tips.
Bait: fish a free-running ledger or feeder, not a weight tied to the main line, or trout feel the resistance and drop the bait. The operator rates two PowerBait eggs, one pink and one yellow, on a single hook with a feeder.
Spinning: use the count-down method. Retrieve at once on the first cast, count two on the next, and keep adding until you find the fish. The spinning for trout guide covers lure choice. I use the same count-down with lures for perch and pike on Windermere.
Fly: when fish are in the top few inches, a booby or muddler on the point holds the team high. If nothing is rising, fish dries “blind” anyway, because often there is simply no hatch.
Whatever the method, travel light, give a spot 30 minutes at most without a bite, set your drag, and renew line and leader yearly.
If Kielder is too far to drive, try Pitsford Reservoir, Draycote Water or Hanningfield Reservoir, or see the Northumberland fishing guide and our lake and reservoir guides.
